DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT: ALEXIS WALSH

We first got in touch with quickly rising fashion designer Alexis Walsh for a comment in one of our editorial pieces on 3D printing & fashion and we have been falling in love with her work again and again. So much so, that we’re bringing her magnificent sculptural creations on the runway on 3rd September! Alexis Walsh is an artist and designer based in New York City. Concentrating on wearable design with an integration of sculptural forms, she utilizes an interdisciplinary approach to fabrication. The majority of Alexis’s work focuses on the notion of using the human body as canvas. Through unconventional materials such as metal and plastic, and the exploration of technologies including 3D printing, Alexis transcends the traditional modes of fashion to push the boundaries of wearable art. All of her garments are sewn entirely by hand, utilising methods of couture design technique. For her most recent collection, the LYSIS COLLECTION, Walsh drew inspiration from virulent formations and deterioration to develop a body of work that consists of shapes that mimic the growth of viral structures while blending organic shapes with rigid structural silhouettes. To make these geometrically-complex shapes real, Walsh combined both traditional garment manufacturing techniques as well as CAD modeling and additive manufacturing to bring her vision to life. The LYSIS COLLECTION was recently featured in Kaltbult magazine and she counts as one of her fans a relatively known singer called Lady Gaga. Do we need to say more? It’s not possible to talk about innovation in fashion without mentioning the London-based brand CuteCircuit. Since it launch in 2004, the wearable technology part company, part mad genious laboratory, has been consistently unveiling the obscure side of fashion tech, giving light to the wonders that smart textiles and mini-electronics can do for the fashion industry. Launched more than a decade ago by Francesca Rosella, its Creative Director and Ryan Genz, CEO, CuteCircuit is the world’s first high-end fashion label creating wearable technology collections. Among a wide range of fashion technology garments, the Shoreditch-based label counts with the Twitter Dress, worn by Nicole Scherzinger, featuring live tweets, and the Galaxy Dress, which lights up with 24000 full colour pixels and is the centrepiece of the “Fast Forward: Inventing the Future” exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.   To produce these items, CuteCircuit uses Patented and Patent Patent Pending CuteCircuit technologies, which together with traditional methods, are 100% RoHS compliant – this means that no hazardous substances are present in the products and that they are free from lead and mercury as well, and are safe to wear. The tech label also makes sure their creations are sustainable and designed to last longer. The Shoreditch-based brand also offers garments that are “forever updatable through the mobile App”, and the micro-electronics that are integrated into the gowns are modular systems that can be recycled and re-purposed.
